In order to remotely administer a Windows XP SP2 machine using WMI, you need to configure the Firewall to authorize it. If the Windows XP SP2 client has its firewall enabled and if it hasn't been configured to accept a WMI connection, WMIX will not be able to connect to it. In such a case, WMIX returns the error: "The RPC Server is unavailable".
To configure a Windows XP SP2 Firewall to accept WMI connections, you need to enable the Allow remote administration exception group policy entry. This setting can either be configured on the local group policy of a machine or globally by configuring the global Group Policy settings of an Active Directory domain.
In this article, we describe how to configure the local group policy on a Windows XP SP2 machine.

From the Windows XP SP2 client, select Start >> Run from the windows startup menu. Type MMC in the open field and click on OK. The Microsoft Management Console opens.
Select File >> Add/Remove Snap-in... from the MMC main menu.
In the Add/Remove Snap-in window, click on the Add... button.
From the snap-in list, select Group Policy Object Editor and click on Add. When the Group Policy Wizard opens, leave the default settings (Local Computer) and click on Finish. Click on Close. Click on OK.
MMC should now display the group policy objects for the local machine. Go to the specified group policy folder using the tree in the left pane of MMC:
Console Root >> Local Computer Policy >> Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Network >> Windows Firewall
Under the Windows Firewall folder, you may see multiple profiles such as Domain Profile, Standard Profile, etc. Execute Steps 6 - 10 below for each profile.
