Shutting down computers & Logging off users

Use the Controls section of a computer to initiate either a shutdown or log off action.

Shutdown Machine

The Shutdown Machine window allows you to configure a shutdown event on a remote machine.

  1. Select the primary shutdown action: Stand By (sets the computer in a suspended state mode) / Power Off (shuts down the computer and then powers it off) / Shutdown (shuts down the computer and upon completion, the computer screen displays: 'You can now safely turn off your computer') / Reboot (Shuts down the computer and restarts it. Upon completion, the computer is at the log-in prompt.). The remote computer must support the selected action. For instance, some older computers do not support the Power Off feature, in which case, the computer is simply shutdown.

  2. Select Execute now and configure a Time out before execution.

This setting represents the number of seconds to wait before executing the selected shutdown event. While waiting for the time out, a notification message is displayed to the console user. If you set the time out value to '0', no notification message is displayed.

    OR

Select Schedule Execution and configure a date and time to trigger the shutdown event. Note: The scheduled execution displays a notification banner to the end user 30 seconds before execution.

  3. Allow User to Abort - Enable to have the notification message display an Abort button that the console user can click on in order to abort the shutdown event.

  4. Force logoff - Forcing the log-off of the console user terminates all user applications, even if documents have not been saved. If this option is not enabled and the remote user has opened applications, he/she can be prompted to save opened documents or to cancel the shutdown event.

  5. Message to display - Notification text to display to the console user. For this text to appear, the Time out before execution value must be greater than 0 or this must be a scheduled execution.

  6. Click on Shutdown.

The status of the shutdown action is displayed. If the shutdown action is scheduled, the scheduled date & time is displayed and no further action is taken. If the shutdown action is real-time, the current shutdown progress is displayed at the bottom of the window (see figure below). If a Time out before execution value has been specified, you can abort the shutdown at any time before the event is executed. To do so, click on the Abort shutdown button.

The shutdown event status displays real-time information about the current state of the remote machine until the desired state is reached. For instance, if you selected the Power Off action, Goverlan displays a status message until the machine is unreachable. If you have selected the reboot event, Goverlan keeps track of the remote machine's state and displays status messages up to the point when the remote machine is rebooted and is reachable again.

Managing Scheduled Executions

You can manage a scheduled shutdown execution at any time before the scheduled date and time of the execution.

On a Single Machine

To view and manage the schedule execution information for a machine, simply re-open the Shutdown feature. If a schedule already exists on a machine, the information is displayed at the top of the window.

On a Set of Machines

Log-off the Interactive User

The Log-off User window is very similar to the Shutdown Machine window. The settings available are the same as the shutdown event configuration.

To execute the log-off action, click on the Log-off button. The status of the log-off event is displayed in real-time. If a Time out before execution value has been specified, you can abort the log-off at any time before the event is executed. To do so, click on the Abort log-off button.
